Good morning dedicated dog or cat owner..

As we approach the launch of Veterinary Secrets Revealed- The Complete Multimedia Home Study Course- I am answering the Top qestions and comments from my readers.

Today’s question: ” How can I tell if my Pet is Sick?”

Answer: My multimedia course will teach you how: in video, in print and in audio.

Determining if your pet is ill is based on performing an adequate physical exam.

Do not expect to be comfortable doing this in 1 day- but after 2 weeks of practice, then you will be quite skilled at performing a physical exam on your pet.

I go through every single part of the physical exam in my At Home Exam DVD.

Here are the Chapter Sections:

The entire exam video includes the examination of the following, by section:
???? Part 1 (Introduction): temperature, pulse and respiration
???? Part 2: eyes, ears and nose
???? Part 3: mouth, lymph nodes, larynx, thyroid glands
???? Part 4: skin, genital and urinary system
???? Part 5: musculoskeletal (muscles, bones and joints)
???? Part 6: gastrointestinal (covers vomiting and diarrhea)
???? Part 7: heart, lungs and trachea
???? Part 8: Blood pressure and pulse

This is a detailed 60 minute DVD.

I go through every portion of the physical exam, showing you exactly what to do.

After watching the video, you can Listen to the At Home Exam on the Audio

( Audio Disc 1)

Then you can hear about me explaining more detail on the Screen Capture Presentation CD ROM ( Volume 1)

And you can read about the specifics in the Pet Health Manual- Veterinary Secrets Revealed.

I include a physical exam worksheet – here you record your findings from the physical exam.

After recording your findings, you can then determine if your pet is sick.

Let’s use an example..

Lewis doesn’t seem himself- he chooses not to eat supper- very unusual for a Labrador!

I give him a physical exam.

I find on exam that he has a fever of 39.5 C ( 103 F)

His gums are a little dry or tacky.

He is uncomfortable when I palpate his stomach.

My findings.. Fever, Slight dehydration (5%), and painful abdomen

Differential Diagnosis.. Dietary Gastritis ( garbage Gut), pancreatitis, other infectious stomach diseases ( ie Salmonella, E.Coli)

My treatment:

No Food for 24 hours

Re-hydration- I offer him fresh water, if he won’t drink it, then I squirt it into his mouth with a syringe

Homeopathic- Nux Vomica- I give him 3 tabs of 30c dose

I would monitor him, then re-examine him the next day.

If it was garbage gut, then he would be much improved in 12 hours.

If he started to vomit profusely- ( more than 3 times, and repeated), then I would be concerned about something more serious like pancreatitis and take him to the clinic.

The next day I take his temperature- it is down to 38.5 ( 101.5) – Normal

He has No discomfort on palpating his belly.

He likely had a case of ” garbage gut” which resolved.

P.S. You will become very skilled at performing physical exams on your pet by studying my course and practicing.

In fact you may even be able to give your pet a better and more thorough physical exam than many of my overworked rushed colleagues..

P.P.S. The above scenario really did happen to Lewis..he has a particular fondness for compost..
