My Dad…David Jones Obituary

By Dr. Andrew Jones

dad2

JONES, David Meredith
May 9, 1933 – April 4, 2010

Dad chose to leave us in style- he passed away peacefully on April 4, 2010 at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice in Kamloops B.C. on April 4, 2010
( Easter Sunday) with his sons by his side, a golf ball in his hand, and a bottle of Single Malt Scotch.

He battled bladder cancer throughout the past year, always maintaining his humor and positively affecting everyone around him.

He will be dearly missed by his wife Kay, his son’s Ian, Michael and Andrew, daughter In laws, Brenda, Shannon, and Catherine, all of his grandchildren; Samantha, Logan, Luke, Emily, Ewan, Fraser, Liam, and Aliza. Dad is survived by his sisters, Christine, Greta, predeceased by his brothers, Campbell and Christopher, far too many friends to mention, and his dog Jesse.

Dad really lived, he loved, he laughed often and loud, and ultimately he made a difference in the lives of so many people.

He was born in the family farm house at the Jones farm in Lillooet B.C., and educated in Victoria at St Michaels University School graduating in 1949. His passion was farming, and he attended Olds Agricultural College.

As a dashing young man and impressive dancer, he charmed my mother Kay at a dance in Lillooet in 1965- and married in Scotland October 16, 1965 with my grandfather John Symington as the minister presiding.

Dad started our family while travelling around B.C. building bridges, but came back to the family farm in Lillooet in 1971, which became our home.

His accomplishments were many and varied- he was an avid Scout Leader, the local Auctioneer, a leader in the Cattleman’s Association, active in local politics, becoming Chairman of the School Board, and a lifelong Liberal with many a fundraiser, election campaigns, and arguments in defense of Pierre Trudeau.

He had a love of golf, which led him to start Lillooet’s first Golf Course- The Sheep Pasture Golf Course in 1985- in 1989 he was featured with Wayne Rostad in CBC’s On the Road Again. His loud laugh could often be heard booming across the barn yard from the Pro Shop.

Dad left the family farm in Lillooet in 2003, becoming part of Ian and Brenda’s family and farm in Cache Creek and then Lewis Creek.

My father had character; he was kind, loving, generous, opinionated, determined, a dreamer, a lifelong reader and learner, the least judgmental person I know, and someone who valued family and integrity.

Did he matter? …Yes

Will he be missed? …Very much so.

Good Bye Dad- We love you.

A memorial service is being held in Lillooet BC at the United Church- Saturday April 10, at 1PM

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Kamloops Hospice Society.

Dear Dr. Jones, Our deepest condolences on the passing of your father. We have lost family members to cancer and most fight valiantly until the end. What is most important is letting go peacefully with family by your side. Bless you and your family for your support and love to your Dad.

Those of us who are Christians also know that death is a passage of life and we enter into eternity with our Lord where there is no suffering or pain. Though you mourn your Dad’s passing also rejoice that he is free of his cancer.

I leave you with part of an eulogy I listened to several years ago. Our priest compared death with our loved one sailing out to sea. We stand on shore waving goodbye and wishing them well on their journey. Eventually they pass out of our sight as the pass beyond the horizon. As they pass beyond our sight they come into sight of loved ones, who have already passed on, on distant shores where they are welcomed home. It is a journey we all take one day. This truly puts life and death in a positive way!

I am so so sorry for your loss. I know that their are no words that I could say to soothe your heartache. I believe in God,and His love for us. It makes it a little easier he died at home with his loved ones around him, some people do not even get that chance. like you said, I believe he died a peaceful death with no more pain and he new his loved ones were suffering to see him in his condition. I am sure at some point he must have opened his eyes, and said to himself God you are here for me I am scared but I am ready and I want to sit at the throne by your side. I want to see all the beauty that heaven holds for us who believe and walk in your righteous path. Its never easy my friend neither is the loss of our beloved pets. But I know in my heart that their is a rainbow bridge, and when we walk through that bridge, when we come home to our Father and throw open those golden gates your dad, and loved ones who have passed away will wait for you with open arms.
I hope I have not offended you in any way that was not my intention. I am here for you and please feel free to email me or contact me at anytime. I will do my best to help you with your loss. Just the fact that you heal pets it shows alot love in your heart

    April 9th, 2010 at 11:03 am

    Andrew,

My sincere sympathy to you and your family.

While reading the wonderful obituary you wrote for your dad, I was struck by the similarities between your family and mine – right down to the “impressive dancer” (my dad was an Arthur Murray instructor in his youth), the Single Malt Scotch, the political arguments, the related reverend, and yes, even the opening of a golf course.

Unfortunately, due to an acrimonious divorce when I was a toddler, I did not get to experience any of that. I was thirty years old when I met my father, and he died of cancer shortly after.

Your dad is one of those larger than life individuals who enriched your life and was a major influence in the person you have become. Though he may be gone, he is and will always be part of you. He has left a wealth of memories which will help with your grief and which you will be able to cherish for the rest of your life.

    Viviane

My sincere sympathy to you and your family.
A life well loved is a life well lived.
I’m glad you have so many wonderful memories
of this multidimentional man, of whom you were blessed to have as a father.

Grief is never easy, we often cope by getting too busy to feel the pain. Initially there is numbness, but when we don’t allow the next stage, that heartwrenching grief, we instead carry it with us the rest of our lives. I learned the hard way that if I try to suppress grief, I’m also suppressing all the joy the person has left in my heart. It’s really kind of beautiful in that when the grief passes the joy -of their impact on our lives, of the end of their pain and suffering, and more (depending on your faith) flows in and is not met by a closed door.

Strangely my one parent died when I was in my teenage years. I suppressed it, went through it numbly and then just continued with life. It wasn’t until the 1st animal died that I’d raised from it’s birth when I realized I was finally grieving my mom as well. That sweet pet not only soothed me in life, but even in his death allowed for the final release of so much pain that I’d carried for 30+ years at that point.

I love how your obituary included his dog.
    That was very touching.

To me, that will be heaven. To live with my Savour, Jesus Christ, and with ALL my loved ones both 2 and 4 legged!

I am so sorry for your loss. Below is a poem that was given to me when my father died. I thought you might draw something from it.

    God Bless,

    A Tribute

    A death has occurred
    and everything is changed
    by this event.
    We are painfully aware
    that life
can never be the same again,
    that yesterday is over,
that relationships once rich, have ended.
    But there is another way
    to look upon this truth.
If life went on the same
without the presence of the one who has died,
    we could only conclude
that the life we here remember
    made no contribution,
    filled no space, meant nothing.
    The fact that this individual
    left behind a place
    that cannot be filled
    is a high tribute
    to this individual.
Life can be the same after a
    trinket has been lost,
but never after the loss of a Treasure.

    Paul Orion

Dear Dr Andrew I am so sorry for this mountain you and your family must climb. Know that many of us are thinking and praying for you and yours. How beautiful going home on such a special Holiday. I have something I would like to share that seems very fitting for your father and family.

    GOD’S GARDEN
God looked around his garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s Garden must be beautiful as he always takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, so he closed your weary eye lids and whispered, “Peace be thine.” It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.

God Bless YOU and YOURS. Cookie W.

Thank you for sharing your dad’s obituary with us and keeping us updated on your dad’s progression with his health issues in the past months. We all feel that you are not only our “internet” veterinarian but a caring friend to each and every one of us and our pets. You dad was very special indeed and quite a character. I live in Victoria, so I found it interesting that he went to St. Michaels University School. I thought that was lovely that your dad had his family with him at the end along with his golf ball and a bottle of Scotch. I’m sure he had a wee nip on his journey. I’m from a Scottish family, so I can appreciate his love of a Single Malt Scotch – my dad’s favourite. My Yorkie, Gus, and parrotlet, Skye (named after the Isle of Skye) also send their sincere condolences.

Please know that many strangers worldwide share your sorrow with the recent loss of your dear Dad. Sweet memories will ease your grief in time. I found the following words a comfort when I lost my mother in 2005 at the young age of 78:

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
    I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow.
    I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there; I did not die.

And, with some final words by Emily Dickinson, 1886:

…Until then, live your life to the fullest and when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart…I will be there.

I was saddened greatly by your family’s loss, but relieved that your Dad’s suffering has finally ended, with the support of the family with him all the way.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, especially yourself and Michael (the ones I have met). I have learned much about the family history because I have relatives in Lillooet, one being a great grandson. The one thing I have learned about you both is how honest, caring, and forthright you and Michael are.

After reading your Dad’s obituary, I now understand where these qualities came from. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and pass them on to the rest of your loved ones.

P.S. Jaxom and Daisy Mae have picked up on my feelings as I write this, and are lying quietly behind my chair, very subdued.

    Dear Dr. Jones and Family,

My sincere sympathies on the loss of your patriarch. Losing a father is a hard thing (I lost mine in 2005) but the memories you have will stay with you through the rest of your life.

As a Hospice Nurse, I’m glad your father and family had the benefit of hospice support personnel.

Your father knew he was loved and he knows it even more now.

I read your email about euthanasia and I understand the turmoil you faced as your father’s condition worsened. I hope you have peace in your heart that everything happens at the right time, for the right reasons.

Your eulogy was tender. Your pride in your father came through loud and clear.

I’m certain he was very proud of you and all the people and pets you help also.

    Again, I send my condolences.

My prayers are with you and yours.

    Your friend,
    Brennan Kingsland

Dr. Jones; Please accept our sincere sympathy to you and your family. Your dad was a handsome man, as I see in his picture; a very mature and a proud man. As heartbreaking as it is to loose a loved one, we all know that God has a special day for all of us to leave this earth, and He chose a REALLY “Special Day’ for your dad. Unfortunately, some leave in a painful way, others die peacefully in their sleep. Your dad will suffer no more…

My dad died at age 57 from a sudden massive heart attack, never being sick a day in his life. Mom, God Bless her, just turned 90 years March 6th. She suffers from Chronic Bronchitus and Asthma, and with each attack, we all expect the worst. She says she will live to be 100 – I hope she lives longer than that. And with her spite for life, I’m sure her wish will come true.

Someday my appointed date will come, and peace and tranquility will be with me forever, as with all of us. I will again be with family and friends I have lost, pets I grew up with, and my 16 “kids” (cats) I have raised in my adulthood, 5 of whom are laying on my mantle in their little wooden boxes, with their favorite toy on top. I chose the box, as they all love to hide and sleep in any box available to them. It is also a symbol of how we are all laid to rest.

Again, my husbands’ and my deepest condolences. May God watch over you and keep you in his grace.

When we lose a parent it is a monumental hurdle. I know that you will mourn for the appropriate amount of time. One day the pain will ease and life will go on, it always does. You help so many people and their beloved pets, you have a calling for that service and we appreciate all that you do. I suspect that came from a great childhood and loving parents. Keep up the good work and know that you are in my prayers along with so many others.
    Best to you and yours,

Dr. Andrews, I am so sorry for you lost. I knew the other day when they did the bone biopsy on him and it came back positive, I prayed he would have more time. My father was a strong well built farmer constuctive man, up every morning at 4:30 even on morning’s he didn’t have to work, served in WWII raised a large family and Then one day he got the word CANCER He did chemo for months but it didn’t work finally they told him he had a couple of months maybe weeks. He was 60 yrs. old. So I know how you feel. I love my Daddy we had our problems since I was the black sheep of the family, but he did try to make up before he died, the best he knew how. So things will get alittle easier in time. But there is not a day that dosen’t go by that I don’t think about him… So hang in there and keep doing your job that you do so well and dad would and is so proud of you………

Dear Dr. Andrew Jones, I just read this and I can’t begin to express how sorry I am at your family’s loss.

I’m afraid I can’t say much – sadness always leaves me quite speechless, though my sympathy is deep and sincere.

I will pray for your dear father tonight – I can see that he was a good husband, a much loved father, and a kind friend.

I know how much hearts must ache at this loss, but we must still remember that he’s safe now, resting, free from suffering and pain, and ready to welcome us when we join him someday.

“The Lord has given and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord.”

God bless the dear man, and may his soul be safe.

God bless all of you, Dr. Andrew Jones.

I am so sorry for your loss, Andrew. Having gone through that just a couple of years ago myself, I know how painful it can be…and yet, there is such peace that comes from knowing that our fathers are no long in pain.

I told Daddy as he was dying, “Ignore my tears. This is a good and joyful thing for you, Daddy. I know you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired. It’s time for you to go be healed and made whole! I’m jealous; you get to go to Heaven before I do. You know that Heaven is a very real place to me, and if I didn’t yet have work to do here, I’d say, ‘Beam me up, Scotty, I want to go!’ But my race is not yet run. Yours is, and you ran it well. But you’d better be about the first person to greet me when I get there!'” …

I hope somehow my sharing that helps. For those who believe, he’s not just in our past, he’s in our future!… And the privilege of being with him as he made his transition… Bitter sweet. Be blessed and consoled. You are in our hearts!

My sincerest sympathies to you and your family at the loss of your father. What a handsome man he was and one with great character. It is clear where his children get all of theirs!!! What a blessing that he was surrounded with his family during the tough parts of his illness and then the final moments. He raised a wonderful group of people.

My prayers are with your mother at this difficult time. I can only imagine the pain of loosing a spouse of that length of time. Please tell her that people are thinking of her.

When difficult times such as this come, I am reminded of the song Garth Brooks sand, The Dance.

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared beneath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known you’d ever say goodbye
    And now I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I’d of had to miss the dance
    Holding you I held everything
    For a moment wasn’t I the king
But if I’d only known how the king would fall
Hey who’s to say you know I might have changed it all
    And now I’m glad I didn’t know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I’d of had to miss the dance
Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I’d of had to miss the dance

I share this with my puppy people when they have lost their four legged friend, but it works for two legged as well.

Your dad sounded like a wonderful man. How wonderful for the world that he was around for the time God gave him.

My love to you and all of your family. As hard as it is, do not be sad that your dad is gone, remember all of the wonderful times that he gave you and that he was a part of. You will see him again. God is an Awesome God!!!

    Dear Andrew,
I’ve been following your Dad’s progress through your newsletters. I’m glad you made the choice to share that journey with all of us.

I understand the devastation of loss. I lost my Dad when I was 15 (he was only 46), and my Mom when I was 28 (she was 60). I recently took care of my brother for a month while he was dying from cancer. He passed Oct. 2 last year. He was 65. I would not have missed being there for him for the world. It is a privilege.

I know words cannopt change things, yet perhaps the outpouring of feelings I see here towards you and your family may comfort you somehow..

Your Dad lives on in you, and all the other members of your family, and through all the ways he came to touch other folks’ lives. That’s something that can never be lost.

He seemed to live life to the fullest… that’s the best way, eh?… no regrets. You are blessed to have had him in your life, and he blessed, to have you in his.

Sending Prayers & Light Your Way,
    Jody

    Dear Dr Jones,

My sympathies go out to you and your family for the loss of your father. I can only say that the following is the summary of my feelings after losing my father in 1978:

The son is the clay the father molds, to make a path unto a worthwhile life.
With satisfaction once that is done, he is free to live, love and laugh with joy.
Then pass without fear or remorse toward a more perfect world, when called,
Because he knows that he will be remembered with love and charity by those who’s lives he has touched.
We honor those such fathers of the world, who molded their children with heart, compassion, charity, honor, respect and love of all God’s creatures, by not only grieving for our loss of time with them, but also carrying on their passions in our hearts and our deeds.

My condolences to you and your family.

Your message comes as I prepare for my mother-in-law’s memorial service. We recently lost her at age 100. I know that this is a very rough time for you and your family. Though he will be sorely missed, know that your father is in a better place … a place with no pain and suffering. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Dr Dr Jones Just a short note to say how sorry I am to hear of your beloved dad’s passing it is hard to lose someone so dear to one’s heart. Onr consolation he is at rest and is pain free. I have just read a little sentence “pain is the price we pay to love” so true be it our family friends or pets. God bless you and all the family

    Dear Dr Jones,

I have for years been such a devoted follower and excited puppy owner, inspired by you and your love for your father. i lost mine twenty years ago and can only say it was a most maturing and shaken experience because like you, I was so close to my father. it is at these time when we are jolted into the knowing of how fragile life is. and how temporal. And this goes without saying you are such a devout promoter of organic living from inside out. I have for these past many months been in deep faith that your dad would recover and am very earnestly sorry for your loss. If you do believe in the spiritual infinity of those who make remarkable differences in our lives and how that presence is never gone, than i say i live with my father’s presence at my disposal always. And such a warming comfort he is when i tend to feel of great need for him.

I continue to thank you for the wisdom, and experience of your work and we at our home rely on you always.

    all my best, tish lampert

Success in life is making a difference. Your father has succeeded and it seems to me like that family tradition has been passed along to his children. You have already made a huge difference in my life with my furry kids. This won’t make the pain of loss go away but maybe you will be able to remember with a smile a little sooner.

So sorry to hear about your Dad…….my own Father suffered with bladder cancer prior to his death……..it is a heartbreaker to watch them suffer…..but a priveledge to be with them as they pass over…….to tell them it’s ok……..knowing they have fought the good fight. I feel now that he is still with me..and I often wonder how he would cope with a certain challenge or problem……..seems to help me de-stress.I know I will see him again with others who have gone before…….and dogs who are greeting him warmly.

    Dr Jones,
We are very sorry for you and your family’s loss of your father. Through the emails you made us love and kind of get to know your dad. I almost lost my husband to squamous cell carcinoma. But, Not without a great fight, better, fresher food and God– he is now cancer free as of 1 year, four more to go before he is considered cancer free by the docs. Just like you recommend good food for pets we also need to have better than the cancer causing junk available in the stores these days. Keep up the wonderful work you do.

You will be rightly proud by the way your father lived his life and he will be proud by the way you are living yours. He will not expect you to resolve all of the difficulties he has left behind as a consequence of his passing and the immorality of others. He will not expect you to do anymore than to continue living your life according to your principles; let those who have different principles answer to their God when their time comes.
