Re: More on Ellen D, PLUS the Carb Myths

//////////////////////////////////////////////

Whoa!

Yesterday`s comments generated a whole lot of
responses. And based on the reactions, I see that
a can of worms got opened.

I reacted a little harsh to Ellen having her Shelter
Dog taken back.

Ellen is clearly a responsible pet owner.

She placed the dog in another home with what seems
to be a quality home.

The Shelter could have re-evaluated the new owners,
and left the dog in that home.

BUT…Things like this happen ALL the time in
the Day to Day of Shelter operations.

At my Animal Shelter, Second Chance, we see
ALL sorts of irresponsibity.

Dogs and Cats are just left on the door step- sometimes
tied up in the rain or snow.

We have had entire litters of puppies and kittens
just dumped at the doorstep.

We have stringent adoption policies, and all adoptees
have to provide references, BUT even then ingnorant
things happen.

SUCH as giving the new adopted dog or cat to a neighbor,
because of barking or a cat scratching ( surprise),
AND not returning to have the pets spayed or neutered.

We recently had 3 former young kittens come back as
3 PREGNANT cats, because the cats were given to somebody else,
and were NOT brought back to be spayed or neutered.

Now this means 20-30 MORE kittens to adopt out.

We see the likes of Animal Fighting ( aka Michael Vick),
animal abuse, and plain unthinking owners that don`t
bother to return and have their pet spayed or neutered.

Because of ALL of this, I sympathize with the small
Shelter that took back Ellen`s former dog. They would
deal with similar issues.

Perhaps Ellen will look to Bob Barker and end
her show with something that brings awareness to
the plight of animals in Shelters..

A reader asked me if there was an issue with OBESE dogs and cats.

MY answer…YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Why….

Not enough exercise.

Too many calories.

BUT primarily because MOST dogs and cats have CARBOHYDATES as their
primary calorie source.

ALL these carbohydrates are metabolized to sugar, increasing your
pet`s insulin level.

Here are a few of the negative effects:

* Weight gain
* High blood pressure
* Heart disease
* Diabetes
* Premature aging

P.S. If you are looking for a dog or cat,
PLEEZE consider your local Shelter..but ensure
that they are spayed or neutered.
