Re: Pet Therapy, The Maritimes and Hoochie…

A cheery Monday to you and your pets.

I am currently on vacation in the Maritimes-

The place is great and the people are fabulous. Most really are friendly
and genuine, Plus they are raving pet owners.

10 years ago I lived here for 2 years, and it was a great experience.

I enjoyed working at a few different Nova Scotia practices, and I especially
got to know and spend time with my wife’s family.

I wanted to become involved with Pet Therapy, and a number of people pulled
strings to have me visit regularly to the Children’s Hospital in Halifax with
my GREAT dog at the time, Hoochie.

My visiting with Hoochie did make a difference- I was able to have conversations
with Children that would not talk to most adults. Many of these children had been
in the hospital several months- they would cope by shutting down, but Hoochie allowed
them to open up in a non threatening or judgmental way.

Pets are unconditional, and when your in hospital awaiting a kidney transplant,
your outlook on life is dramatically different.

As this was a Pet Therapy program, a Nurse recorded changes with the patients,
and documented these to show the benefits of Hoochie visiting.

Some of those in ‘Infectious Disease’ were opposed to it, but my trial was a huge
success, so the program continues today, but on a larger scale.

And if I wasn’t convinced of the benefits of Pet visitation and Pet therapy before
that experience, I sure was after.

Hoochie became the most talked about scheduled event on the Kidney Unit- The
children had the staff host a birthday party for him–complete with dog
food birthday cake.

I do love Lewis, but I really miss Hoochie, and Pet Therapy was a
great memory.

P.S. I’ll be back to the top reasons your pet visits the vet soon,
but there are so many things to talk about that it keeps getting delayed.
In fact I am finding more things to publish about animal rights, animal
healing, training, natural remedies, pet food etc.. than there is time.

P.P.S. If you want to read about Hoochie and what happened, read my letter

  1. I AM SO SO SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR WONDERFUL CAT CLEO. I TO HAD A CALICO CAT THAT I HAD TO PUT DOWN BECAUSE OF KIDNEY FAILURE,AND SHE WENT BLIND.
I HAD HER FOR 23 YEARS, SHE WAS A STRAY MY GRNDFATHER FOUND AND BROUGHT HOME TO ME. HE DUG HER OUT OT THE WOOD PILE AT THE LOCAL GROCERY STORE, SHE WAS COVERED IN FLEAS AS BIG AS YOUR THUMB NAIL. HE AND MY GRANDMOTHER BROUGHT HER HOME GIVE HER A BATH WHICH SHE LOVED… WE NAMED HER MINKEY, BECAUSE AFTER WE CLEANED HER UP SHE LOOKED LIKE A MINK COAT. SHE WAS MY BEST FRIEND, SHE SLEPT WITH ME, WATCHED SCARY MOVIES WITH ME AND EVEN ATE POPCORN WHILE WATCHING TV.I HAVE HAD OTHER PETS SINCE THEN,BUT SHE WAS MY BEST FRIEND.I TRULY MISS HER, WE LOST A FAMILY MEMBER THAT REALLY UPSET THE WHOLE FAMILY. RIP TO ALL THE WONDERFUL ANIMALS IN THIS WORLD, YOU MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR US AND YOUR UNCONDTIONAL LOVE CAN NEVER BE REPAID AS MUCH AS YOU HAVE PAID TO US.

  2. Dear Andrew & family,

Now passed over The Rainbow Bridge.
I do know what it is like to loose pets.
My sympathy & prayers to you all.
