Vets charged for Starving Horses
By Dr Andrew | December 17, 2008
Hello again everyone.
I was alerted to this story from one of my staff
(Thanks Nina) and I thought you should all be aware
of it.
—————————————————
Strip The License of the Two Veterinarians who
Starved 6 horses in Langley, BC
—————————————————
The SPCA says another five horses found on the Langley
property were also in extremely poor condition and are
under veterinary care.
It’s been 48 hours since five sick and starving horses were
rescued from a Langley, B.C. farm and its still touch and go.
“We nearly lost one last night,” said Eileen Drever, SPCA
cruelty investigator. The horses were seized by the Surrey
SPCA after their owners used another of their emaciated
thoroughbreds to try to pull their car out of a ditch.
“That’s outrageous,” says Shawn Eccles, another Animal
Protection Officer. “Then to take a look at the animal
itself they believe that animal has the health to do this.
I’m stunned. Stunned.”
Even more stunning is who owns the horses. “It has been
confirmed that the owners are veterinarians, which was
shocking,” said Drever. This is the first time I’ve seen
people with background they have that have allowed animals
to get in this condition,” said Eccles.
CTV News has learned they are Mark Morohn and Carol Schoyen,
and they lived with the horses on the Langley farm.
No one was home when CTV visited the farm Friday. The clinic
where they used to practice has changed ownership.
“Veterinarians, in my mind, would be held at a higher standard
of care,” said Dr. Jeff Grognet, President of the BC Veterinary
Medical Association. But even though the SPCA is recommending
charges against the couple, their veterinary licenses can’t
be pulled immediately, like with teachers or doctors. “They
can pull a license pending the investigation,” says Grognet.
“In our situation, we have to investigate and reach a conclusion
before we can look at suspending a license.”
At the SPCA, the surviving horses have stolen the hearts of
the shelter staff — and the public. “The support has been
phenomenal,” said Drever. “We know these animals tonight
are being taken care of and their stress has been relieved
and we’ll find them good homes,” said Eccles. With a report
from CTV British Columbia’s Shannon Paterson.
To sign the Online Petition to have the licences of these
Vets removed, go here:

To comment on this story, feel free to post here..
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
P.S. This is hard to believe- HOW could anyone, especially
so called Veterinarians do this?….And then there is the
foot dragging by my Veterinary Association- whom have ‘issues’
with those using alternative medicine…
NO Questions, in this situation these Vets should IMMEDIATELY have
their licences pulled- THEN after a thorough investigation
it can be determined if they ever get the right to practice again.
DO they own the horses in question?- YES
Are the horses emaciated?- YES
IS the SPCA pressing charges?- YES
Then immediately remove their right to practice.
The petition is here:

I just don’t understand how anyone could be so cruel, but especially vets. I signed the petition, hope these 2 excuses for human beings are not only stripped of their licenses and made to pay for the horses food and care now and through the animals lifetimes but banned from ever having anything to do with animals again. They should do jail time too.

Before agreeing to sign the petition, I have a question. Has it been determined whether any of these horses is foundered? To someone who doesn’t know horses, one of the first things to be done with laminitis (founder) is to get as much weight off the horse as possible. I currently have a rescue horse that scored a 1 on the body scale when I got her. She is still underweight per the instructions of both my vet any my farrier due to her having previously foundered. To someone who doesn’t know that, she just looks like an under fed horse.
If these horses are strictly suffering from neglect, I agree, pull their (the vets) licenses and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. But make sure they are in the wrong PRIOR to besmirching their professional reputations. As far as trying to use a thoroughbred to pull a car out of a ditch, that’s just wrong however you look at it. A draft horse, maybe, but not a thoroughbred.

It is very disturbing to read about animal abuse, and here in Colorado there have been several lately. The last one is of a shelter that advertises as “no kill” actually euthanizing many dogs to make room for more. The people running it have been removed, and will be prosecuted. Another incident involves a pet store that has been selling sick puppies, imported from Mexico. Many people bought them, and right away had to spend a lot of money to get them well. There must be more regulations to stop this. There have been individual incidents of pet abuse that makes you cry. I will sign the petition.

This is very sad, yes. But what about the animals that people eat - most are kept in inhumane conditions and slaughtered cruelly. No sentient being should be without protection.
If the horse story bothers you, then please buy free range meat, and try to ensure that the animals have been raised in a humane environment.

I started riding as a baby with my father and I rode my own horse at age 2. I have owned many and have had a love affair with horses and all anamals and the pets I have owned and loved through the many years. Right now my husband and I own 2 English bulldogs. I had to sell my last horse, Angel, because I fell on hard times and I let her go for $700.00. I got her for $2000.00. It broke my heart but I couldn’t pay for any more food for her and I had to think of her and deal with my feelings. I sold her cheap to a good person so she wouldn’t have to go one day hungy and would have all the things that I couldn’t pay for anymore. There is no way I could watch her starve to death in front of my eyes. I loved her too much for that. So I have to say when I read about these vets it made me cry; how dare they!!!! I would like to treat them the same way they treated those horses. They should never be able to practice as vets or own any amaimals again and I think they should be fined and put in jail. We need better laws for people who treat anamals so badly. I am so happy that the horses that are left are being cared for but also so sad for the ones that didn’t make it and for each minute-hour-day they all suffered. How could they? They must not have feelings for the suffering of other beings in this world. My husband and I, and family and friends, will be signing the petition. To all the people and all their beloved pets I wish you a Very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!!!!!!!

I also signed the petition. There’s no excuse for what they did to these horses. I couldn’t believe what I was reading about them having this poor horse trying to pull their car out of a ditch. These people obviously have no passion for animals. I vote to see their licence revoked and they should never practice again.

I cannot even begin to express how much this story sickened me right to the core of my being. When anybody does such a terrible thing, it is simply beyond reason. However, when it involves those who have devoted their lives to the welfare of animals, it is even more revolting.
This story really got me thinking about how lucky I am to have found a wonderful veterinarian. The good ones are worth their weight in gold!!!

Travis is the victim. The owner should be charged for animal cruelty.

Exotic pets should not be family pets.
If you are in the business of animal acting then you need to treat the animals with respect and contain them in secure humane enclosures that provide protection from the elements while providing them with the required diet and environmentalstimulation to keep a well rounded animal. Exotic wild, non domesticated animals should not be allowed to roam freely around ones home or property unless controlled and certainly not when visitors pop in. What is it with the human race that they have to “show off” these animals to other humans with disregard for the safety of both human and animal. I am a professional dog trainer and certainly would not house a wild animal like some of these so called professional trainers. It’s time we started looking out for the welfare of animals from the animals point of view, not the selfish human one.
Cheers
Have a great week.

I am against any person who owns a wild animal,
snakes, lizards, spiders they should be left in their environment. The Biodôme in Montreal Qc.have penguins it is so SAD to see them in a small swimming pool, FOR THE PLEASURE OF HUMANS.
