I love what Chris in #4 says. Chris sounds like a super person, and so does Chris's vet! Compassion first--for the animals, and (hard as it is) for the "loser". After you have had so many phone calls and so many abused animals brought in, and so many cases weighing on you, I'm sure your mind leapt to the worst-case scenario. This in addition to the tone the undoubtedly stressed, challenged and perhaps compassion-limited man took, probably led to your reply.

I do wish you'd had him bring the kittens to you, no charge. If nothing else, you could have passed them on to the local rescue after treating them naturalistically. The problem might have been very easily resolved with minimal care. It sounds like both of you were very stressed at that point in your respective days.

The kittens' problem sounds identical to one I had with a kitten I had adopted in 2000. She had gained weight to become a little four-pounder and suddenly stopped eating, losing weight rapidly. AND her eyes got runny! Oh god! I was in a panic! I took her to my vet!

The cure? Eye/nose drops, administered BID, to relieve the congestion in her sinuses and nasal passages (which had led to the lack of appetite, because cats' appetite "leads" with the nose). A lovely, economical solution for what could have been a life-threatening problem.

My beautiful Emma is now eleven pounds and eight years old. I am so blessed to have her and my other four cats in my life. Sometimes they are the only ones keeping me from total depression and totally giving up on living.

We must remember it is still within the collective memory of some families to drown "surplus" kittens because they did not have neutering and spaying in the bad ol' days. It was perhaps "kinder" than letting them starve or die of sickness.

Nowadays, thank god, we can neuter and spay feral cats and, with regular feeding, set them loose in barns or other places where rodent control is needed! We can sponsor spaying and neutering for the cats of poor people, so they, too, can enjoy animal companionship.

Let us help each other as much as we can. Biting our tongues, sometimes, if we have to. The more we help judiciously (keeping animals from harm, but keeping them with people who love them, even when they can't afford the best food and surroundings) the more we can help animals. And isn't that our goal?

I am so disgusted by this gentlemen whom says he is a pet owner. He doesn't deserve to own anything. I don't know where we go to make tougher laws to fight for these animals. They were born into this world and cannot control the family situation they were taken into. However, when it gets to a point someone wants to kill a pet for minor medical issues it makes me ill. This is another reason I cannot watch animal planet anymore. Myself owning a cat and dog cannot understand how you can be so cruel to an animal that only wants love from you & gives you more love than another human can. I cannot understand it & I wish their was more we could do to help these animals whom cannot fight for themselves. Someone needs to take a step and fight for them.

We need to change legislation to make it as risky to harm an animal as it is to harm a child. There are situations where when a child is unwanted, what's the law about being able to drop it at a hospital no questions asked? I would rather have an animal dumped off somewhere it will receive care, no questions asked, rather than wonder what became of it because that wasn't an option like Doctor Andrew probably is right now.

Could there be a way to trace the call to see where it came from? Maybe there was a camera somewhere in range to get this DIRT BAG'S picture! Then, maybe, someone would recognize this PIECE OF FILTH and the CMP or Canadian SPCA could find him and make puss come out of HIS EYES! There is no reason for this type of piece of s--it to waste oxygen! It seems as though God would interven in a matter like this and strike his ass down before he could let these poor kittens gtet in his shape to start with. You were sure a lot nicer than I would have been if I had taken the call, but I realize you are a professional and professionally you can't talk to people the way you would some time like to, I BET you would like to have told him an ear full. BLESS YOU DR. JONES, YOUR THE BEST FRIEND AN ANIMAL COULD HAVE!!! And dont worry, This Rotten Piece of Filth will get what's coming to him--10 Fold*

We had to have our elderly cat Tucker put to sleep a couple of years ago. We agonized over the decision and all of us cried but we knew he was suffering and wouldn't get better. Our vet send a sympathy card. I can't imagine anyone being casual about having a pet put to sleep. Our pets are known as our "furry babies." Too bad people don't have to take a class before they can become pet parents.

Someone should get this creep - and sterilze him using the 'Bobbitt' method. 'People' like this are a waste of good air. When we adopted our cat, the lady asked for references and WHO my vet was -because within 2 weeks, Abby had to had a physical. They could take possession of my new baby if I did not meet the requirements. I have always taken good care of my babies - and this one already rules the roost. I truly believe that we reap what we sow....if he harms the cats - GOD will take care of him (not soon enough for me). What a scum bag!!! Why didn't the creep call the ASPCA? .....he probably would have went to jail when they saw the condition the cats were already in...poor things. Hope he doesn't have children. This really irks me to no END. Hope he gets what he deserves...SOON. Deb

MY first thought is do to him what he does to his animals.
The law is not tough enough and the fines a pittence. When I see some of the cases on TV, my comments wouldn't be printable.
The R.S.P.C.A 's hands are tied in so many cases and they take so long to go to court and in the mean time they have the expense of looking after the animals and they can not be adopted to loving caring people.
Something has to be done.

Let's not lay more blame and name-calling on this guy. We don't know him, we don't know his situation. People who want pets but run into hard times (who else has been there?) get so frustrated with not having enough money to go around, and, let's face it - vet expenses are high. This man may very well have been a good pet owner - but his money may have run out, so bit by bit his world is falling down around his ears, and now his cats are sick and he can't do a darn thing about it. Bottom line is - you just don't know!!!!! YES! There are some people who shouldn't even own a fish, but we don't know if this guy needs to be put in that catagory, based on one phone call. Obviously he cared enough to try to go to a public phone booth and look up a vet's number and try to make the call in the first place. Doesn't that say something?

It's not more laws we need. What we need is prices to come down so even people with very few resources can own and love a pet - and take proper care of it.

DR. JONES,
I DO RESCUE FROM MY HOME, I DON'T HAVE A CLINIC JUST SOME NATURAL KNOWLEDGE AND A HEART TO HELP.
WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL THE MAN TO BRING THE CATS IN AND THEN YOU COULD HAVE EVALUTATED THEM AND GIVEN THEM HELP. I DO THINK THAT THIS WORLD IS MONEY DRIVEN, NO ONE WILL DO ANYTHING ANYMORE FROM THE HEART, ALWAYS THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR. I INFURIATES ME TO THINK THAT THESE CATS COULD HAVE BEEN HELPED IF ONLY WE WOULD HAVE FORGOTTEN ABOUT OURSELVES. YOU COULD ALSO HAVE GIVEN HIM SOME FREE HOMEOPATHIC ADVISE. WHICH MAYBE WOULD HAVE HELPED THE CATS AND SAVED THEIR LIVES.
NOW WHO KNOWS WHAT HE DID TO THEM.

I agree that this so-called human being needs to be taken out of the "gene pool himself" because we all know what he did to those 2 poor cats inhumanely. Have compassion for someone like that? Not even - that is where abuse stems from first animal, then child, then adult - women. Sometimes there is only so much a vet can do or give as to why he didn't just have him bring the cats in to his clinic at no charge. We just found a 5 month old rottie pup that someone had thrown out of a car as his hip was bruised where he landed, had a tremendous urinary tract infection, didn't know how to eat dog food or play, was very malnutritioned, had broken down one ear where they had been pulling him around with it, he was afraid of hands & water, but now 5 weeks later he is doing much better, is now healthy, knows that there are gentle & loving hands, we still have a long way to go before he could be adoptable but he is going to be a good little dog - wish we could get our hands on who abused him! But there will always be mean people in the world who don't know how and don't care how they treat a dog or cat or other animals - because to those kinds of people they are just that - "ANIMALS" - and don't deserve nice treatment. Those people don't think or realize that "animals have feelings too and do know what kindness and love is". I won't go so far as to give animals human rights, but I do want them protected against any form of abuse, because I have loved and lost every type of animal - cats, dogs, horses, cattle & milk cows, and even pet large hogs that all meant a lot to me over the years, plus a few others. (Yeah, I grew up on a farm). Well, enough - protect the animals and put the abusers in jail - give them what they do to the animal they abused - see how they like it!!

I agree that this so-called human being needs to be taken out of the “gene pool himself” because we all know what he did to those 2 poor cats inhumanely. Have compassion for someone like that? Not even – that is where abuse stems from first animal, then child, then adult – women. Sometimes there is only so much a vet can do or give as to why he didn’t just have him bring the cats in to his clinic at no charge. We just found a 5 month old rottie pup that someone had thrown out of a car as his hip was bruised where he landed, had a tremendous urinary tract infection, didn’t know how to eat dog food or play, was very malnutritioned, had broken down one ear where they had been pulling him around with it, he was afraid of hands & water, but now 5 weeks later he is doing much better, is now healthy, knows that there are gentle & loving hands, we still have a long way to go before he could be adoptable but he is going to be a good little dog – wish we could get our hands on who abused him!
I may get flack for this but, don't we have enough "laws" dictating our lives? And what good do they really do? I believe most people do NOT need laws to tell them how to live. People are going to be shameful beings no matter what laws are being enforced in the land. I agree, some people should never have pets... even children! But what can we do? These kinds of people will keep having pets and children they should never have. Should we become a police state/country/world dictating every movement or thought of our lives? I would like to live on another planet if it ever came to that! If I were a vet receiving a call like the one you got, I would have offered to come and get the kitties and take them away from the man. I would have tried to diffuse his temper, some how, and let him know he wasn't going to be penalized in any way....just to get the kitties to a safe place. I would have advised him to think twice about ever having a pet again. It may be a burden to take care of the kitties, but at least my conscious would not have bothered me. Not saying anything about the way you handled the situation, Dr. Andrew! Hindsight being 20/20 and all that!!! I don't know how I would have reacted right in the midst of the situation! Thanks for making me think about how I'd react to something like this!

I'm surprised you didn't just tell him to bring them in and you would be happy to euthanize them at no cost to him...that way you at least could have seen the animals, rescued those that you could and only put down the hopeless one/ones.
I'm kind of shocked you didn't, just to get them out of this loser's hands. 'Tis a puzzlement to me...
