“Jethro came from a very rural home… the decision was made to shoot the dogs, but luckily AARCS volunteers came…before they met a terrible end. Jethro was one of them, and he was the shyest and most shut down dog of the bunch despite his youth. When he first came into my house, I wanted to cry. His entire body would stiffen in fear, every muscle in his body would tremor if I came too close or dared to try and touch him but never once did he bite me or try to hurt me in response. He just plainly shut down. He has a long road ahead of him, he might never be a typical human affection seeking lap dog, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve to live a happy, carefree life, he too needed and deserved a chance. And he will stay with AARCS until we can find the perfect home for him.”
“Almond”
“Almond came into foster care after many weeks of trying to catch her. We were very relieved that she survived a very bitter cold snap. She eventually surrendered to her captures rather than the elements. We think she has been on her own for some time and is fairly independent and of course quite scared. This poor little girl simply needed a warm home, food and love. She is still very shy but is curious of her new surroundings. It will take a little time and patience but the trust is showing in her eyes more every day.”
Jethro and Almond are just a few of the thousands of animals that have been helped by The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS), but both they and the animal shelter are in need of help.
“We do what we call active rescue, and we deal mostly in rescue from rural areas where there are no or limited animal services,” said Deanna Thompson, executive director of AARCS.
“People call us, and say ‘we saw a dog go running by with a broken leg’ and we go out and search for them.
“We focus on animals where there really is nobody else.”
This is the shelter for the most desperate cases, animals reported hurt or lost in the rural area around Calgary, where failure means a dog or cat starving, freezing or dying from injuries.
From gunshot wounds to broken limbs, AARCS tries to save them all – but their success means the Calgary-based shelter now needs some saving itself.
New arrivals have pushed that system to the limit, with 250 animals leaving no more room for dogs and very little space for cats.
That squeeze for space, along with veterinary bills totalling $15,000 over the past fortnight, has the non-profit shelter putting out a rare plea for public help.
“We need financial help, and help with things like food,” said Thompson.
Clearly they need help, and they are doing much needed, yet not seriously valued work. Calgary is one of the wealthiest cities in Canada, yet it’s not the animals that are getting supported.
It’s up to dedicated pet owners who get just how important pets are.
